Avalanche take 3-1 series lead with Game 4 OT

The Colorado Avalanche took a 3-1 lead in the 2022 Stanley Cup Final with a 3-2 overtime win in a pivotal Game 4 in Tampa on Wednesday. After dropping their first game on the road this series, the Avalanche now head home with a chance to clinch their first title since 2001.

Colorado’s Nazem Kadri, playing in his first game since being sidelined with a thumb injury during Game 3 of the Western Conference final, scored the game winner at 12:02 in OT.

The Avs head home up 3-1

The Avs head home up 3-1, and the Stanley Cup will be in the building (eventually) on Friday night. Nobody who’s watched the last two seasons will count the Lightning out until Gabriel Landeskog is holding the Stanley Cup, but let’s just say it: the Avalanche are the better team right now. That doesn’t guarantee anything in the NHL, but it’s a hell of a place to be. On to Game 5…

Nazem Kadri wins it on OT for the Avs

Nazem Kadri scoring a goal in any fashion tonight — after his last few years and his last 18 days — would’ve been a wild enough story. To do it in overtime? On a goal that the entire officiating staff apparently missed? That’s something else entirely. Memorable ending to a memorable game … and man, the Avs looked genuinely scary down the stretch in overtime, didn’t they?

Avs win 3-2 in OT

Nazem Kadri just pulled a Patrick Kane, scoring an overtime winner that nobody seemed to see because it stuck in the net. What an unbelievable moment for a guy who waited forever and then an extra week to play his first Stanley Cup final game.

If the Lightning lose, how do their fans react?

OK, this is the sicko in me, but… if the Lightning lose, how do their fans react? This could be the last home game of the year. Do you give them the hero’s ovation, thanking them for the last three years, just in case? Or treat it like any other loss and head for the exits, sending a message that you’re confident they’ll be back?

Did you know?

Did you know that Ondrej Palat has the same number of playoff game-winning goals (11) as Mario Lemieux, Bobby Hull, Patrick Kane, Martin St. Louis, Teemu Selanne and Daniel Alfredsson? Because I didn’t until about five minutes ago. Tampa is hoping he ties Bryan Trottier, Steve Yzerman, Phil Esposito and others by the end of the night. What a quietly great career he’s had for himself.

Andrei Vasilevskiy makes a huge save

Colorado has controlled the first seven minutes. We’ve seen Devon Toews hit a post and huge stops by Andrei Vasilevskiy on a Drew O’Connor breakaway and a prime chance by Gabriel Landeskog via Valeri Nichushkin.

We could be here awhile

Classic overtime setup here — both teams have gotten some prime, early chances. Stuff is chaotic. The ice looks terrible. It seems like it’ll end soon. If it doesn’t, we’re gonna be here a while. There’s rarely an in-between.

Could this overtime be the series?

Elliotte Friedman just said that it felt like this overtime is going to be the series, and… yeah, he may be on to something. If Colorado wins they’re one win away with three tries and headed home. And if Tampa gets it and ties it up, they’ll have the momentum and will have planted some significant doubt. This next goal won’t be the Cup winner, but it sort of might be.

Never underestimate the heart of a champion

They didn’t get off to a great start, but the Avalanche are one shot away from taking Game 4 and heading back to Colorado with a chance to win the Stanley Cup in front of their home fans. Nobody will count the champs out under any circumstances, but the Avs would be close to 90% favorite territory if they can take this one.

We could be about to see the biggest Avalanche goal in 20 years.

Overtime here we come

The good news is that Lightning defenseman Ryan McDonagh got away with an obvious trip of his own against Nazem Kadri. Clean slate for overtime, right? They’re just gonna call the rulebook once we get there, right? RIGHT? Darcy Kuemper and blocked shots were huge for the Avs in the last minute or so. We’re headed to OT. Nick Paul seems like he’d be a decent goal pool choice.

An interesting extended shot

We just got an extended shot of Kelly Sutherland talking to Victor Hedman after a non-call on an obvious trip. Sportsnet described it as an explanation, and if so I’d love to hear that one. “Victor, there’s six minutes left in regulation of a tie game in the playoffs. Are you dead? You don’t seem dead. And if you’re not dead, we’re not calling a damn thing unless somebody accidentally shoots the puck over the glass.”

Could Game 4 go into overtime?

Not quite there yet, but we’re getting close to that cliched “we’re already in overtime” feeling.

For what it’s worth, the Avs are 4-1 in overtime this postseason, including Game 1 of this series. The Lightning have only played one other OT game, winning against Toronto with their season on the line. That one came on a goal from Brayden Point, who they don’t have tonight.
