Liam Adams, marathon, result, video, reaction, medal tally, Australians in action

Australia has a new cult hero after self-confessed “weekend warrior” Liam Adams earned widespread praise for his heroics in the men’s marathon on Saturday night.

Adams, who works 40 hours a week as an electrician, came up just seven seconds short of a bronze medal, instead finishing in fourth — a fantastic effort.

It was the best result of Adams’ career although the Australian later told reporters that a mishap with his phone meant he was “guessing the whole way” as he raced out to an early lead.

“I was setting the map of the course and the format didn’t work on my phone so I didn’t have a clue, I was just guessing the whole way,” he said, per AAP.

“So I didn’t know how many hills there were and that last half was absolutely brutal. Probably a bit too hard at the start and just was carnage in the end.”

It was an incredible showing from Adams regardless, whose success is a product of pure determination and hard work.

“I’ve been doing soldering recently. It’s pretty labouring on the body. I’m not doing double runs like those guys, I’m getting out there after work,” Adams said.

“Sometimes I just have to go have a nap and then I’m going for a run after work and still out at 10 o’clock at night, eating dinner late. It’s a pretty shocking cycle that I’ve got.

“Hopefully all the weekend warriors, anyone working 9-5 who’s battling with the work-running type of lifestyle, hopefully they can look at that and find some inspiration. If I can do it, then they can do it too.”
