0 1

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh field hockey team returns to Ulrich Field this weekend to host Merrimack on Saturday and LIU on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Last weekend, the Mountain Hawks (3-5) fell to Boston University with 4-1 loss in their league opening game. Despite a tough contest, senior goalie Maddie Kahn made a career-high 18 saves. Kahn received a Patriot League honorable mention for her overall performance this weekend after totaling 22 saves over the two games.

On Sunday, Lehigh faced Sacred Heart and secured a 5-1 win against the Pioneers. Senior Sarah Bonthuis tallied two goals and two assists, while junior Abbie Brown, first-year Maddie Kandra and junior Julia Gatelein scored the remaining goals for the Mountain Hawks.

After her stand-out performance against both Boston University and Sacred Heart, Bonthuis was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week. Bonthuis scored Lehigh’s lone goal against Boston University and then had a career high six points at Sacred Heart behind two goals and two assists.

Lehigh’s first opponent of the weekend is Merrimack (0-7), a team that has yet to secure a win  this season. The Warriors have already dropped games to Patriot League opponents Colgate and Holy Cross. This is the second time in program history that the Mountain Hawks will face the Warriors. Last year, Lehigh defeated Merrimack 4-1, with junior Lotte Smorenburg and senior Sydney White netting goals on the day.

The Mountain Hawks’ Sunday opponent, LIU, is 3-5 on the season with wins over La Salle, Quinnipiac and last time out, Georgetown. Lehigh won the inaugural meeting over LIU in 2017 while the Sharks have captured the last three meetings, including a 1-0 final last September.

Next weekend, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Easton, Pa. to face rival Lafayette on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. Lehigh will then host Villanova on Monday, Oct. 3 at 6 p.m.
