49ers vs. Dolphins predictions: Defense doesn’t view this as measuring-stick game
From the outside looking in, this Sunday’s showdown against Miami’s top-ranked passing offense is a chance for the 49ers’ defense to prove itself. The unit’s most recent game against an elite attack, after all, ended in disaster.
That was over a month ago against Kansas City, when the Chiefs dropped six touchdowns in seven drives and averaged 9.1 yards per play against the 49ers. The final score was 44-23. Statistically, it was the worst 49ers’ defensive performance of coach Kyle Shanahan’s tenure.
So naturally, a matchup with the Dolphins — the only team that’s rivaled Kansas City’s offensive efficiency this season — seems like an ideal measuring stick for the 49ers’ defense at a time that it’s again surging.
But that’s not how the 49ers’ locker room sees it. They’re entering this game with confidence in their process that might border on brash. Four straight second-half shutouts and a full-game shutout against New Orleans — the 49ers haven’t allowed a point over their past 94 in-game minutes — have fueled some convicted belief.

Commanders failing to finish drives
On back-to-back drives, the Commanders have run a combined 23 plays and used up 14:12 of clock, but they’ve gained only 103 yards and come up with no points.
Both times, penalties stalled the drive. Joey Slye missed a 52-yard field goal attempt, and Washington still trails New York 20-13 with 10:06 to play.

Browns-Texans game oddity
After Kyle Allen’s fumble on a failed QB sneak was returned for touchdown, Texans-Browns is the only game this season to feature both a safety and a defensive touchdown off of plays inside an offense’s own 5-yard line.
There have been three total defensive touchdowns off of plays inside an offense’s own 5 this season, and the Browns have two of them, the other occurring in a Week 3 win over the Steelers.

A.J. Brown continues to torment his former team
A.J. Brown, punking his former team, fully underway now. Also, what a throw from Eagles QB Jalen Hurts. Ttians DB Tre Avery actually had good coverage, but that’s a 29-yard touchdown.
It’s 28-10 Eagles. Brown at five catches for 95 yards and two scores.

Lions keep putting up points
Detroit has now scored a field goal or a touchdown on six straight drives against the Jaguars.
That is the third longest drive scoring streak of the 2022 season, behind only Dallas and Buffalo both posting seven straight scoring drives, both of which occurred in Week 11.

D’Andre Swift finds end zone
Jamaal Williams has been the Lions go-to rusher in close, as he is second in the league in rush attempts inside the opponent 5-yard line, but that hasn’t stopped D’Andre Swift from finding the end zone on the ground.
Swift’s score against the Jaguars now gives him a rushing score in three of the Lions’ last four games and has vaulted him to a double-digit point total in each of those contests (full PPR scoring).

Browns scoop-and-score touchdown
Browns find the end zone and again, it’s not the offense.
Cornerback Denzel Ward picks up a Kyle Allen fumble on a quarterback sneak and runs it in for the score.
Along with the punt return TD by Donovan Peoples-Jones in the first half, Cleveland has multiple non-offensive TDs in a game for the first time since Week 14 of 2014 against the Colts.
Browns lead the Texans 14-5 with 10:10 left in the third quarter.

Chiefs inactives: DE Frank Clark (illiness) will play vs. Bengals
Chiefs DE Frank Clark, who was questionable with an illness, will give it a go today against the Bengals.
The most important player on the Chiefs’ inactive list is left guard Joe Thuney, who will miss consecutive games for the first time in his seven-year career because of an ankle injury. Thuney will be replaced by guard Nick Allegretti, a four-year veteran who played well in last week’s victory over the Los Angeles Rams, when he was matched up against superstar defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

Commanders dominating clock, but converting drives into enough points
The Commanders have owned the time-of-possession battle during their run of six wins in seven games, and they’re doing so today, holding the ball for 25:54 to the Giants’ 15:32.
The problem? Washington is trailing, 20-13, and the offense just used up eight minutes of clock without scoring, with an 11-play drive stalled by penalty. We’re already down to 3:34 left in the third quarter.

Giants picking on rookie CB Christian Holmes, now lead Commanders
Washington is definitely missing starting CB Benjamin St-Juste. Rookie Christian Holmes was turned inside-out by Isaiah Hodgins for a 6-yard touchdown, and New York takes a 20-13 lead.
The Commanders have not been able to handle Daniel Jones, who is 12-of-13 (the only incompletion being a spike) for 108 yards and a touchdown and also has nine carries for 63 yards including five first downs.

Giants strip-sack Taylor Heinicke, set up with chance to take lead
Washington left John Bates — a strong blocker, but still a tight end — one-on-one with Azeez Ojulari on third-and-8, and Ojulari won around the edge and stripped Taylor Heinicke. The Giants recovered and will start at the Commanders’ 20 with a chance to take the lead.
Ojulari hasn’t played since Week 4 and that was just his second sack of the season after he posted 8.0 last year as a rookie.

Lions have found effective kicker in Michael Badgley
The Lions struggled early in the season to find a kicker, but Michael Badgley has settled in nicely since joining them in Week 4. He had field goals from 38, 47 and 45 yards in the first half against the Jaguars to give the Lions a 23-6 lead at the break.

Jalen Hurts rushing score gives Eagles 21-10 lead on Titans
The Eagles cap off a seven-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jalen Hurts to take a 21-10 lead on the Titans.
Hurts now has nine rushing TDs on the season and 22 for his career, which ties Cam Newton for the most rushing scores for a QB in his first 31 starts.
